Please Take The Equine Code Survey

In 2013, Equestrian Canada and the National Farm Animal Care Council released the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Equines. This important document is a comprehensive guideline for equine owners and managers to address the basic needs of food and water, shelter, freedom of movement, companionship, veterinary and farrier care, husbandry practice and humane end of life options.

The Horse Welfare Alliance of Canada (HWAC) has launched a survey to gauge awareness, implementation and compliance to Canada’s standard of equine care. The survey, that will close on October 31, 2017 targets all aspects of the equine industry. If you are a horse rider, owner, custodian, equine business operator/owner or staff your participation and feedback will be appreciated and useful.

“The care or ownership of a horse is a serious and challenging commitment and responsibility,” says Mikki Shatosky, HWAC project coordinator. “It is important for the health and well-being of the animal to ensure that basic needs are being met. In Canada, the industry standards are set in the equine Code of Practice document.”

“We ask that all those involved in the equine industry assist to participate and spread the word of the survey – invite your friends to also complete the survey,” says Kelly Coughlin, HWAC board member.

The survey can be accessed, along with the equine Code document, through the HWAC website.

Survey results will identify opportunities and needs for resources, educational programming and other aspects related to the sustainability of the equine industry in Canada.
