Stable Looks To Stay Hot

The Poulton Stable is currently hot, but will it remain that way Thursday night at Red Shores’ Charlottetown Driving Park?

First-race post time for the 12-dash card is 7 p.m.

IDK has Post 2 in the card’s $2,000 feature (Race 12). Vincent Poulton will be in the bike for trainer Gary Poulton and owner Gail MacDonald of Charlottetown. The six-year-old Stand Forever pacer is listed as the morning line favourite after having defeated five of his seven rivals last Thursday in Charlottetown. The Poulton Stable has been firing on all cylinders since having a huge Old Home Week.

IDK has some real competition from Post 5 starter Capitalism, who will be steered by trainer-driver Jason Hughes. ‘The Blue Knight’ currently leads all trainers in Charlottetown, thanks in part to Capitalism’s impressive streak of only missing the top three once since May 10. Other entries in the Thursday night feature include Machinthesand (to be driven by Gary Chappell), Cambest Kisser (Kenny Arsenault), Nobestbfor (Walter Cheverie), Windemere Express (Marc Campbell), Pacific Oak (Corey MacPherson) and Perfect Escape (Ron Matheson).

The top trot of the night has been carded as Race 6. Abundaspin has been installed as the morning line favourite from Post 7 for driver Steven Shepherd, trainer Harold Shepherd and owner Mikaela Lustic of Warren Grove. The winner of 77 lifetime races is winding down his career, as the trotter is 14 years old and must retire before he turns 15 on January 1. The veteran just finished second in the Open Trot Saturday night, timed nearly two seconds faster than all his competition. The race office has selected Eat Pray Trot (Brian MacPhee) and Majian Dillon (Jim Ripley) as the next two choices from Post 6 and 1, respectively.

The back-up pace will line up for Race 9. Island Gigolo has been favoured from Post 2 for driver Mike Stevenson, trainer Tom Weatherbie and owner James Pound of Hunter River. The three-year-old son of Ameripan Gigolo has been facing stakes company most of the season, but will battle the likes of Bowyer Hanover (Cheverie) and First Art Down (Ken Murphy) this week.
