Howard C. Hammond, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 21 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, Md.

Born in Powellville, Hammond was the son of the late Clyde F. and Margaret (Maggie) Lewis Hammond. In addition to his parents, Hammond was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ruth E. Hammond; and brothers V. Frank Hammond and Harry C. Hammond.

Hammond is survived by his sons, Steven H. Hammond of Salisbury; Mark T. Hammond and his wife, Peggy, of Berlin; his sister in law, Harriette Hammond; and his niece and nephews.

Hammond attended Wicomico High School, class of 1946, and later Goldey-Beacom College where he received his degree in business administration. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, Hammond was able to put his degree to use when he started his career in insurance. His philosophy of helping others and treating people as you would want to be treated yourself served him well in business and in life. He was a leader with his company. He and his wife made many friendships and were able to travel to some wonderful parts of the world over his 49-year professional career.

Beside his family and his business, Hammond's other passion was harness racing. He loved horses, especially trotters. He enjoyed helping with the training and care of his horses and the many races he and his wife attended. There were a few big wins over the years and a horse he was particularly fond of was Doggone Yankee, who earned close to $150,000 on the track and went on to become a successful Maryland sire.

If you knew Hammond, you knew a kind and soft-spoken man whose advice and opinion you could always count on.
