It is with heavy hearts that the family of Robert ‘Bob’ William Rooney announces that on Thursday, August 25 Bob lost his hard fought battle with cancer.

Rooney has been surrounded by the love of his family and friends during his courageous fight. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Donna (Weaver). Bob will be remembered by his sons, David Rooney of Mount Forest, Dan Rooney (Debbie) of Kitchener and Mark Unger (Denise) of Chilliwack, B.C. Cherished grandfather, to his grand and great grandchildren. Fondly remembered by his two brothers, Ron Rooney (Brenda) and Wayne Rooney (Bonnie) all of Arthur. Bob was a very special uncle to his nieces and nephews. Dearly missed by his extended family, dear friends and by his beloved white dog, Petro. Predeceased by his father, Bert, mother, Wilma, and brother, Jack.

Bob was greatly involved in the Arthur Minor Lacrosse in its infancy and coached for several years. He was a master member of the Chrysler Sales Guild and was immensely proud of receiving the esteemed Number One Lease Manager in Canada Award and the success of Arthur Chrysler.

Bob belonged to the Prince Arthur Lodge # 334 for 50 years. His greatest passion was his involvement in the Standardbred racing industry for 40 years as a breeder/owner of over 100 racehorses. He enjoyed travelling and camping in his RV with Donna. Making new friends as well as the stories, jokes, good fun and relationships made around the campfire would put a smile on his face.

Affectionately known as ‘Freddie,’ he was certainly one of a kind. He was empathetic and possessed a rare and unique sense of humour and quick wit. When he was given lemons he would make lemonade. Bob’s happy and friendly demeanour was front and centre everywhere he went. He would want everyone to enjoy life and don’t make it complicated was his philosophy.

The family would like to thank everyone who attended Bob’s celebration. He referred to it as the “best day of his life.” He lovingly appreciated everyone that called or visited him at the hospital and at home. A special thanks to the Bayshore caregivers, CCAC, Filling the Gap, Care Partners, Dr. Brault, Dr. Valdes and the Nurses at Groves Memorial Hospital for going above and beyond.

Words cannot express the family’s gratitude. Bob was an uncommon person, someone who made a difference in many lives. Bob’s generosity knew no bounds and he was a legend in his own time. Good-bye our good friend. You’ll never know how much you will be missed. To honour Bob’s wishes cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Arthur.

Wanaka, a horse that Bob co-owned, will start from Post 10 on Friday in the first $97,000 divison (Race 3) of the Casual Breeze Stakes at Mohawk Racetrack for trainer Shannon Henry and driver Trevor Henry. To view the entries, click here.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Bob Rooney.
