Carlyle Smith Passes

E. Carlyle Smith, 87 of Skaneateles, NY, passed away on July 8 after a brief bout with cancer.

Smith was an avid horseman that purchased most of his horses at the Lexington, Harrisburg and Morrisville Yearling sales. Smith had the good fortune over the years of buying two eventual Elitlopp winners and one Elitlopp runner-up from the yearling catalogue pages. He also purchased Monimaker, Gum Ball and Nordin Hanover.

Other top horses that Smith bought at the yearling sales include Silent Spring, No Short Cuts, Mattgilla Gorilla, Oranges, Muscle Memory and Algiers Hall.

His partnerships over the years have included John Simpson, John Cashman, R. Peter Heffering, Jimmy Takter, John Stark, Clint Galbraith, The Antonacci Family, Jeffrey Gural, Alan Hainsworth and Albert and Michelle Crawford.

Smith was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Clare, who passed away in December of 2000. He is survived by his six children, Julie (Kent) Stoffle, Larry Smith (Marianne Oliva), Cheryl (Jim) Roy, Vicki (Terry) Kelly, David (Diane) Smith and Timothy (Jackie) Smith, all of the Syracuse, NY area; 14 precious grandchildren: Alex, Scott, Ryan, Maggie, Nora, Kyle, Kevin, Lauren, Danny, Eric, Samantha, Luke, Nick and Tori. And finally he is survived by his loving companion of 14 years, Eloise Luchsinger.

Calling hours will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 13 at Maurer Funeral Home in Baldwinsville, NY. A funeral mass celebration of his life will be Tuesday, July 14 at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Parish on Fay Road in Syracuse, NY. There will be no graveside ceremony.
