Burkhart, Fenwick Earn HHYF Scholarships

Each year the Harness Horse Youth Foundation awards multiple scholarships to deserving students with interests in harness racing. This year’s honourees are two young women who show a passion for the sport that made them clear choices for their respective of awards. The Foundation’s prestigious Gallo Blue Chip Scholarship winner will be announced later this month.

Seventeen-year-old Krista Burkhart of Rome, New York, is the recipient of the Curt Greene Memorial Scholarship. The $2,500 award goes to a student who has demonstrated a passion for harness racing. Krista will carry that passion to the State University of New York at Morrisvlle in the fall pursuing a degree in Equine Racing Management. The daughter of Lisa Brown, Krista is an alumnus of multiple HHYF events and she worked in the Adam Capizzano Stable for nearly eight months over the past year.

Mollie Fenwick, 19, of Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania is the winner of the Sweet Karen Alumni Scholarship. The $1,000 grant goes to an individual who has previously participated in an HHYF Program. The daughter of Harry and Billie Jo Fenwick, Mollie attends Penn State University, where she majors in Veterinary and Biomedical Science, with minors in Equine Science and Youth and Family Education. Mollie regularly works with her family’s Standardbreds.

The Harness Horse Youth Foundation is a charitable 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing young people and their families educational opportunities with harness horses, in order to foster the next generation of participants and fans. The Foundation has been making a difference in young people’s lives since 1976, and its programs include interactive learning experiences with these versatile animals, scholarship programs, and creation and distribution of educational materials.
