Carl Jamieson, one of Ontario’s top trainers for many years, thought enough of the yearling colt Sporting The Look last fall to shell out $72,000 to bring him home. He hasn’t regretted that purchase.
The colt is from the first crop of Sportswriter, which have been extremely impressive over the past couple of weeks as the two-year-olds have started their Ontario Sires Stakes season. He currently has a commanding lead in both the pacing colt and filly sires’ standings after one Gold and Grassroots event for each division.
Word of Sportswriter’s prowess as a sire started to surface early this year. In mid-February Jamieson had noted with a laugh about Sporting The Look: “I hear all of the Sportswriters are training really well, I was hoping it was just mine training really well.”
Jamieson, who trained his youngsters over the winter in Florida, was high on the colt, the third foal of the $162,000 winning mare Lyons Mandi, early.
“He’s just like an aged horse, he does everything right.” Carl shares ownership of Sporting The Look with the colt’s breeder, 30 Plus Stable of Trenton and Tom Kyron of Toronto, Ontario.
Sporting The Look continued to impress his trainer once he started his racing career early last month. In his initial qualifying race he was victorious by more than four lengths with Carl’s son Jody, one of Canada’s leading drivers, in the race bike.
Sporting The Look was fourth in his pari-mutuel debut, an overnight at Mohawk and made his first foray into stakes action on July 7 in the first OSS Gold event for this group. In that $70,000 contest he earned back almost half of his purchase price as he won in 1:53.2.
He’ll look to add to that bankroll on Wednesday in the second of three $70,000 Gold events for the rookie pacing colts at Grand River Raceway where he drew post one.
His stablemate from the Jamieson barn, Make Some Luck, also drew the rail in his OSS division, race one. Owned by Jody, Make Some Luck was an impressive winner in his first lifetime start, a Grassroots event at Mohawk last week where he romped to a four length 1:55.2 effort which earned him a jump up to the Gold boys.
“Jody bought him at the Standardbred Canada sale. He’s a nice colt,” said Carl who added that Make Some Luck was gelded early in the year simply to make him easier to handle around the barn. “If they aren’t going to be stallions, it just makes it easier.”
Both Jamiesons are familiar with Make Some Luck’s dam, a Western Hanover daughter named Mustang Kensley as they raced her during her two-year-old season. Make Some Luck, by Camluck, is the mare’s fourth foal. Mustang Kensley’s half-sister, also by Camluck, named Shake That Junk, was a successful OSS performer, earning more than $388,000 in her career.
