Doug Covert Passes; Arrangements Set

Published: July 14, 2011 12:13 pm EDT

Longtime harness racing participant Doug Covert of Barrie, Ont. passed away Wednesday, July 13

at the age of 71.

Covert was a passionate horse owner with a thorough love of the game. After owning horses for years, Covert was able to accomplish his dream and cross off the most important item on his bucket list - training standardbreds.

Covert was one of the first owners to list Scott Zeron to drive in 2007, and Zeron's second career win came aboard the Gary Crowe-trained and Covert-owned Operamystic. Other notable and beloved horses connected to Covert were Cadillac Angel and Blissfull Art.

Trot Insider has learned that a memorial for Covert will take place at Georgian Downs on August 6. The first race will be dedicated to Covert. Following the race, family and friends will gather in the grandstand to share memories and desserts in his honour. All are welcome.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Doug Covert.

The best horse Doug ever owned was Pure Broadway. He is now 14 and I am getting him ready for the fourteen year old race in New York. This one will be for you Doug.

I believe that win was at Hanover Raceway, and Operamystic was our Filly Claimer of the year as well. Our condolences to the Covert Family.

You will be missed, Doug...but certainly not forgotten.
