Charlie Bowen, for many years the director of Sponsorships at the Red Mile, and before that in a similar role for the Little Brown Jug, passed away during the morning of Tuesday, July 12 at an Indiana care centre. He was 84
.
Bowen had been in declining health and had missed his first Lexington meet last fall.
Bowen's wife, Lee, predeceased him.
Funeral arrangements are not yet available.

"An old Columbus friend (quote from Ben Falter), Charley Bowen, who had always been in love with harness racing, talked me into going with him to an Indianapolis sale," Falter vividly recalls. "My wife also went along, and Charley wound up bidding against Curly Smart for one of the ugliest horses I had ever seen-big bony head and so skinny he looked like railroad tracks over a trestle. His name was Ensign Scott and Charley Bowen finally got him for $700."
