Maritime Breeders Finals Saturday

Red Shores’ Charlottetown Driving Park will host one of its biggest cards of the season on Saturday, as the three-year old fillies will contest the Ken Starratt Memorial and the three-year-old colts will clash in the Doug Harkness Memorial.

The $25,420 Starratt Memorial has been carded as Race 9. Charlottetown trainer Tom Weatherbie has three horses in the final, including elimination winner Glory Jean from post 5 for driver Mark Bradley and owner Blair Hansen. The filly, who flashed a final panel of :28.4 in her last start, will give morning line favourite Howmacscanasta (to be driven by Gilles Barrieau) everything she can handle. The other Weatherbie starters, Pownal Bay Style and Howmac Annie, have drawn outside posts. The luck of the draw went to Southview Sassy and trainer-driver Terry Gallant. The final also includes Howmac Fiesty (Danny Romo), Maudail Mac (Ken McDonald) and West River Ambyr (Clare MacDonald).

The $21,430 Doug Harkness Memorial (Race 11) is expected to head to post at roughly 8:51 p.m. The powerful Downey Stable of New Brunswick will send out Jackson K Down (Gilles Barrieau) and KD Overdrive (Danny Romo). The elimination winners have drawn Post 6 and 7, respectively. Steve Mason conditions the pacers. Jackson K Down is the morning line favourite after having won both his stakes assignments so far this season. Heart And Soul (Clare MacDonald) and JJ Jodster (Marc Campbell) are other notables in the field. The race will also feature Wishiwasagigolo (Mark Bradley), Lukes Cowboy (Kenny Arsenault), Offshore Cowboy (Dale Spence) and Howmacsblackjack (Earl Smith).

Preferred pacers will assemble in Race 12. DGS Camme (Gilles Barrieau) has received top billing. Trained by Jackie Matheson, the invitational star just missed his target last week after enduring some traffic problems in what was his seasonal debut. The son of Blissful Hall – who is owned by Quentin and Hal Bevan, Tom Clark and Ron Matheson – fired a :27.4 final quarter, but Forever Paradise (Mike McGuigan) held on to the victory. Narragansett, First Art Down, All Turrain, Clic K and Warrawee Phoenix are also on the roster.

Post time for the Saturday card is 6 p.m.
