Enhanced Examinations For 'Cup' Horses

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) advises trainers and owners that Official Veterinarians will be conducting an enhanced examination of horses entered in this Saturday’s North America Cup at Mohawk Racetrack.

Trainers are requested to make their horses available for this hands-on pre-race veterinary examination at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning. We also ask that trainers send a groom to attend the horse, and not have any bandages or topical poultices, or liniments on the horse.

This is the second year of a pilot introduced prior to the last year’s Metro Pace and the Canadian Pacing Derby.

“Based on comments we received last year, we believe the racing community supports these efforts,” said Dr. Bruce Duncan, AGCO Manager of Veterinary Services. “And of course the health and welfare of the race horse and the safety of the participants are of paramount concern to the AGCO. We encourage industry feedback with respect to applying this enhancement to other racing events.”
