Ont. Resident Mare Program Reminder

Published: May 5, 2011 04:31 pm EDT

Just a reminder, if your mare has not yet foaled, it’s not too late to register her for the Standardbred Improvement Program’s Ontario Resident Mare Program

.

For the 2011 foal year, your registration form and all fees must be submitted prior to foaling in Ontario.

To qualify as an Ontario Resident Mare, the mare must be enrolled with the program each year and meet all eligibility requirements as outlined in the 2011 Program Criteria booklet. There is an annual enrolment fee of $50 per mare.

By enrolling in the program, foals out of registered Ontario Resident Mares are considered Ontario Bred Foals and as such are eligible for Ontario Bred Rewards. This year, in 2011, these rewards, equal to 15 per cent of purses earned, will be available for two-year-old, purse-winning Ontario-bred horses racing in the Ontario Sires Stakes program, as well as selected open stakes.

In 2012 an announcement on the selected three-year-old stakes will also be included. The selected stakes are made on an annual basis based on the level of purse and added money. Announcements will be made annually to accommodate for the creation of stakes that fit the criteria.

Ontario Bred Rewards are payable to and intended to directly reward the breeder or mare owner who made the decision to participate by enrolling the mare in the Ontario Resident Mare Program.

Standardbred Improvement Program including Ontario Resident Mare Program information, criteria and forms may be accessed from the Featured Showcase section on the home page of the Ontario Racing Commission’s website (ontarioracingcommission.ca).
