Cheeky Mare, Foal Win May's Fan Club Zoom Challenge

Published: May 27, 2013 11:18 pm EDT

Congratulations to Kelley Dietrich and Jeff Waltenburgh of Langley, BC, for the winning shot of their mare and foal sticking their tongues out in the Mare & Foal Theme Zoom Challenge.

Kelley captured this heart of harness racing candid moment quite by accident Jeff explained, ”My wife took the shot. Thought she was taking a beautiful picture of them standing in the field, but I pointed out to her what they had done in the photo. She was in complete shock! We saw your contest and thought it would be great to enter the photo.”

The mare is Odds On Carmen and the foal is out of Youdontknowjack and soon to be named.

Kelley says she spoiled the “two goofballs” for their picture. “I can honestly say they sure are a perfect fit for our goofy family. If you look at a bunch of my family photos, my family members are making the same faces!!! Thank you and this sure made my day! I just thought it was great just to have the photo entered.”

Jeff, a trainer, driver and breeder, got his groom’s license when he was 12 and has been going to the track since he was a toddler. His father owned horses and would take him to the track almost every day. Jeff has not trained horses in two years due to a shoulder injury but hopes to be back at it soon.

Jeff and Kelley own three broodmares, a two-year-old and two foals. The first foal they ever bred, Yanotherhos, was sold to some friends. She is now three and just finished second in the $75,000 Stallion Stakes at Fraser Downs on May 11.

Congratulations Kelley & Jeff and thank you to the other photographers who made it to the final round:

  • Frances Lund of Charlottetown, PEI for her shot of the chestnut mare and foal

  • Marie-Josée Bériault of Les Coteaux, Quebec for her shot of the mare Sally’s Valentine with her foal

  • Hannah Beckett of Lynden, Ontario for her shot of the foal at Cook Creek Farm, Mt Pleasant, ON
