Horseman Dominic Staffrey, 92, passed away on March 30 at his residence.
Staffrey was born December 6, 1922, in Vienna, Ohio, the son of Achille and Theresa Schiavone Staffrey.
He was a member of Christ Church, Glenwood Ave., Boardman. He was a POW during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart while serving in the United States Army. He was a member of Ellsworth VFW, Steel Valley POWs and American Legion Post 301.
Staffrey's love was his horses. He was the trainer and driver of Missouri Time, who was a world champion horse.
He was past president of the Canfield Horsemen's Association, a member of the Ohio Harness Horsemen's Association and had been a driver and trainer for 40 years. He was honoured to be on the Wall of Fame at Northfield Park.
He loved to garden and his generosity showed as he was giving vegetables to everyone. He also loved to play cards.
Staffrey is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jeanne Kreitzburg, whom he married April 1, 1944; in-laws, Alma Jean (Robert) Brown, Edward (Millie) Kreitzburg, Ray Kreitzburg and Charles (Sandy) Kreitzburg; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Chris; and brothers, Chris, Leonard and Michael.
Services celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday (April 2) at the Lane Family Funeral Home Austintown Chapel. Family and friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday (April 1) at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions should take the form of donations to the church in his memory.
