Ronald McMillan Passes

Lifelong harness racing enthusiast and longtime participant Ron McMillan of Alma, ON passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at Groves Memorial Hospital in Fergus, ON

. He was 73.

Alongside his wife Peggy, Ron shared a love of the sport which spanned several decades. He bred, owned and trained several standardbreds, including his best steed of the late ‘80s, Main Answer. The Dancer Hanover mare won 35 races from 103 career starts, and earned $77,812 and a mark of 1:59.4 over Flamboro Downs in 1989.

A decade later, the Bo Knows Jate filly Sweetie ($202,408) was a solid contender in the Grass Roots Series of the Ontario Sires Stakes for Ron and owner Mike Foerster. Some of McMillan’s other campaigners include Armbro Ventilate and family favourite Cabonga Cal.

Ron is survived by his wife Peggy, daughter Nancy, Robert and Marlene Hackert and Paul Hackert, brother "Tiny" and Marie McMillan, Floyd McMillan, and Jerry and Diane McMillan.

There will be no funeral home visitation or funeral service. A family graveside service has taken place in the Elmira Union Cemetery.
