Collins Wood left an indelible mark on the breeding industry on PEI. A mare he brought to PEI was the dam of the first three year old to beat 2:00 on PEI and that is just one of his many accomplishments. As a youngster he learned to drive in the ice races on the Hillsborough river and developed a thriving livestock business at a young age that included trips to the Old Glory sales at Yonkers to buy racehorses and breeding stock. The trucks were eagerly awaited on their arrival on PEI and the mares did much to improve the bloodlines in Atlantic Canada. Stories about Collins Wood are legend and he was what most would consider "a character". His wit and wisdom were also legendary and his favorite saying was "owning horses is a sickness", said with tongue in cheek. The Island has lost a great horseman, a supporter of many of the young men who have gone on to be recognized for their training and racing abilities. I had the good fortune to sit with Collins on a regular basis at the old Top Of The Park in Charlottetown. It made going to the races a real experience. I miss you "chucklehead"
