Edward Gilman Passes

Longtime Standardbred horseman Edward Gilman, 78, of Exeter, NH, passed away on Sunday, November 12 at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born in Boston, Mass., the son of the late Daniel E. and Lillian H. (Toland) Gilman. Edward was a graduate of Exeter High School, Class of 1957, and attended the University of New Hampshire.

Edward’s love of horses started as a young boy when he learned the trade from his father. His harness racing career started with his father racing at the fairs in New England. He also raced at Hinsdale Raceway (where he won numerous driving titles), Rockingham Park, and Bay State Raceway (aka Foxboro). He also won the Jess Brown driving championship at the Rochester Fair.

Edward was also a letter carrier at the Exeter Post Office for 15 years.

Family members include his son, Mark (Cathy); daughters, Kim Diaos-Gilman (Greg) and Kerry; granddaughter, Sara (Long) Marcheterre; and his longtime partner, Barbara Gilmore.

Visiting hours will be held at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, on Wednesday (November 15) from 5-7 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. Please visit stockbridgefh.com for further information.
