Tartan Grandstand To Be Demolished

Those that want to get one last look at the Tartan Downs grandstand had better move quickly.

The CBC reported late last week that Sydney, Nova Scotia landmark, which has been the target of vandalism and arson in recent years, has been ordered demolished by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

Owner Jack MacNeil, who is looking to sell the property, will be making arrangements with a local contractor to have the grandstand demolished. The grandstand was last operational in 2006.

Choosing to remember the track and its grandstand in the best light possible, veteran Tartan Downs race-caller Kansas Snow is having a tough time coming to grips with the present state of the facility.

"What I remember of the track was one of the finest plants in Atlantic Canada," Snow was quoted as saying. "To see it today it's just in shambles, it's just a total mess and how it got to that state it's in now, is mind boggling."
