Jack McCoy Passes

Published: October 26, 2013 07:53 pm EDT

Trot Insider has learned that Jack (John N.) McCoy of Battle River Stables fame passed away on October 23 following a courageous battle with cancer at age 74.

Jack was a passionate owner of standardbreds for three decades. Battle River Hawk, Battle River Bret, Battle River Storm, and Battle River Rylee were just a few of the horses that carried the stable namesake in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. Jennas Pass, Freedoms Treasure and a host of others also experienced Jack's care and attention.

Chair # 2 at Table F-15 at Northlands Park was Jack's seat and he seldom missed a race night. He could drive a horse better than most while sitting in the grandstand. Trips to the winner's circle were common especially when Joe O'Brien was training. Post race carrots were an essential part of the routine with his brother Tim.

Jack is dearly remembered by sisters, Joyce (Art) Baird, Linda McCoy; brothers Dale (Gail) McCoy and Tim McCoy; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

The family would like to express their respect, appreciation and gratitude for the exceptional care and direction of Dr. Andrew Belch (Cross Cancer Institute) and the many health care staff who assisted with Jack's care over the past 10 years.

At Jack's request, there will be no memorial or interment service.

If desired donations may be made to The Alberta Cancer Foundation, Cross Cancer Institute, 11560 University Avenue, Edmonton, T6G 1Z2, or a charity of choice.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Jack McCoy.
