There’s A Horse For Everyone!

Fractional ownership is a relatively new concept in racehorse ownership, and many different models exist in Standardbred and Thoroughbred racing. It’s a great entry point for someone brand new to racehorse ownership and offers a lot less risk than the traditional methods.

So, if you’ve always wanted to own a racehorse and felt that it was too expensive, or too risky, the fractional route might be the way for you to go. You still get the same experiences and it’s a great way to test the waters of racehorse ownership without diving into the deep end on your first horse.

On Friday, October 6, in co-operation with the upcoming London Selected Yearling Sale, a free racehorse ownership seminar will be hosted at The Raceway at Western Fair District. The seminar will focus on fractional horse ownership and will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (just prior to the live card of harness racing). Seminar attendees will receive 20 per cent off dinner that night and a $5 betting voucher.

The seminar will feature presentations from ownership groups LandMark Racing Stables, thestable.ca and the Standardbred Breeders of Ontario Association (SBOA), and answer prospective owner’s questions about racehorse ownership.

LandMark Racing Stable provides a unique opportunity for harness racing fans to participate in the fractional ownership of several horses, trained by veteran conditioner Mark Steacy, for a very modest one-time investment. This year will mark the 11th year for this group.

The Stable, formed in 2015, and owned and operated by horseman Anthony MacDonald, along with his wife, Amy, offers buyers a comprehensive, cost effective and informative purchase process with shares starting as low as a few hundred dollars.

Each year the Standardbred Breeders of Ontario Association (SBOA) offers nine individuals the opportunity to purchase a share of a Standardbred yearling. With the assistance of the SBOA and trainer Blake Macintosh, this year’s newcomers to harness racing will be guided through the intricacies of ownership.

All three groups offer an affordable and easy way to become involved in owning a Standardbred racehorse.

Workshop attendees will also receive an entry into the Win A Share in A Racehorse contest, sponsored by the Ontario Sires Stakes and presented in conjunction with the London Selected Yearling Sale hosted at the Metroland Media Agriplex at Western Fair District on October 14 and 15. The contest winner will receive a share ($2,000 value) in LandMark 11 Stable which will include an Ontario-sired horse.

Racing takes place at The Raceway on Friday, October 6 starting at 7:00 p.m.
