Following a brief illness, Helen Southgate passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Hilltop Manor in Cambridge, Ont. She was 97 years of age.

Predeceased by her parents Victoria and Armstrong Bros co-founder Elgin Armstrong (Brampton) and her husband Reginald McLeod Southgate (1987). Cherished mother of Jane Southgate (Bob Hanenberg) of St. George, Ont., and Elgin Southgate (Barbara) of Antioch, Illinois. Beloved grandmother of Leah and Brooke. Forever remembered by her brother Charles Armstrong (Lenore). Predeceased by her sisters Mary Holley, Isabel Burkart (Bryan) and Ruth Arscott Miller.

Helen was the proprietor of her own hair salon in Brampton for many years at a time when women seldom owned their own businesses. For Helen, her children Elgin and Jane were the centre of her world. There are many great memories of summers spent at the family cottage in Inglewood. Helen also traveled extensively with her mother showing Hackney ponies in Ontario, Québec and at State Fairs in the Eastern USA.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, Jan. 7 followed by cremation in accordance with Helen's wishes.

In Helen's memory, donations to the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society would be appreciated by the family.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Helen Southgate.
