Three Sandown Breeders Stakes splits for two-year-old pacers were held at Fraser Downs on Friday, with two tilts for colts and one division for fillies.
A non-wagering card was held earlier in the night for the pacing colts and geldings, with each division carrying a purse of $11,124.
Silver Star Pride converted from a perfect pocket trip for driver Jim Marino in first tilt. The Usher Hanover – Dal Reo Jewel colt sat nose-to-helmet in the two-hole behind leader Millbanks Express (Dave Hudon) through panels of :28.3, :59.2 and 1:31.
Silver Star Pride popped the pocket for Marino around the final turn and he blasted by Millbanks Express for a two-length victory in 2:01.1. So Not Quick (Bill Davis) finished third despite making a pair of breaks in the mile.
It was a maiden breaking score for Silver Star Pride, who is owned by trainer Grant Hollingsworth and Gurdaval Sandu. In two career attempts, the colt has earnings of $5,837.
Primary Purpose had only one purpose in the second split and that was to go down the road, which he did perfectly for trainer/driver Rod Therres. The Cammibest – Sing Mitzi For Me colt set stanzas of :28.3, :59.1 and 1:28.2 en route to a career best clocking of 1:57.
Segomo (Barry Treen) rode in the pocket the entire mile, but could only salvage second, beaten by four and a half lengths. Millbanks Apache (Keith Clark) was third.
Therres also owns and bred Primary Purpose, who is perfect in two lifetime attempts while banking $8,312.
The lone $17,468 division for the pacing fillies went on the wagering card and Austins Minnie made an impressive lifetime debut for driver Clint Warrington, Jr. and trainer Rick White.
The Austin Carr – Armbro Nancy filly slipped into the pocket behind Promisinggoodnews (Barry Treen) at the :28.4 opening quarter, but she was soon out and on the move to take control at the three-eighths, setting a half in :59.1.
Austins Minnie was under siege from Sugar Mountain (Rod Therres) down the backside, surrendering a short lead at the 1:27.4 three-quarters; however, she battled back along the inside to win by a length in 1:57.4. White's other starter in the race, Crackers And Surf (Rick White), was second and Sugar Mountain stayed for third.
White co-owns the youngster with Janet White.
In the $17,000 Fillies and Mares Open Pace, Lil Deuce Coup took the short way around the track to score for driver Scott Knight. The six-year-old Jet Laag mare settled into fourth as Lil Kim (Jim Burke) hammered out fractions of :27, :57.1 and 1:25.
With mares fanning out around the final turn, Lil Deuce Coup shot up the pylons and received a gift when Lil Kim began drifting out in the stretch. Lil Deuce Coup took full advantage of that opportunity and closed up the rail to win by a length and a quarter in 1:54.2. Lil Kim was second and Adorable Killean (Dave Hudon) finished third.
Lil Deuce Coup is trained by Walter Slopianka for partners Randy Inks and Hanne Kuisminbainter. In 20 seasonal starts, she is 4-2-1 with earnings of $37,170.
