Snazzy Hot Rod Overlooked in Open

Snazzy Hot Rod must have felt a bit like Rodney Dangerfield when he caught a glimpse of his closing odds on the way to the winner's circle following his score in Monday's $47,000 Open Trot at Mohawk Racetrack.

Despite toting a 7-for-17 record into the assignment, the photogenic son of Mr Lavec was let go at odds of 12-1 for trainer Kevin O'Reilly and owner Terry Devos of Langton, Ontario.

The four-year-old homebred worked out a perfect pocket trip for driver Steve Condren, who shadowed Misterizi (Rick Zeron) through fractions of :27.4, :57.2 and 1:25.3 before tipping out for the stretch drive.

Condren summoned up :27.2 closing speed from Snazzy Hot Rod, who prevailed by three-quarters of a length in a time of 1:53.2. Misterizi was a lapped-on runner-up and race favourite Armbro Continental (Trevor Ritchie) finished third.

It was the 12th lifetime victory for Snazzy Hot Rod, who now boasts a career bankroll of $277,512.
