Deep Finesse Extends Streak In PEI Colt Stakes

Deep Finesse notched his ninth consecutive victory at Charlottetown Driving Park during a full card of PEI Colt Stakes divisions for two and three-year-olds on Saturday afternoon.

Phil Pinkney's Deep Finesse extended his win streak in one of the five two-year-old colt divisions.

The son of Western Paradise advanced to the front before the half in 1:00.1. After posting a 1:30.2 third quarter, Deep Finesse paced home in :29 for the win by almost five lengths in 1:59.2. Rocky Bubba (Marc Campbell) was second and Island Banner (Danny Romo) finished third.

The two-year-old son of N Xample, Haggies Macbagpipe, opened the 15-race card with a wire-to-wire victory, taking a new lifetime mark of 1:58.3 for trainer and driver Paul MacDonald. The time was the fastest two-year-old colt division of the afternoon.

Woodmere Fastball (Earl Smith), a son of Western Success, put away a challenge from the post time favourite Ultimate Blessing (Todd Trites) past the half mile marker in his division, finishing strong in 1:59.

The Western Paradise gelding PH Cyril (Bernard McCallum) nosed out the favoured Porthill Gatsby (Danny Romo) to post a new mark of 1:58.4, while the son of Western Success, Big Oster (Earl Smith), upset in the final two-year-old colt division in 2:00.1 for trainer Elton Millar.

Charlottetown also hosted five filly events for freshmen pacers.

The Western Paradise filly Semjac Legacy picked up her third consecutive win with a five and a half-length romp in a new mark of 1:59.2 for trainer and driver Darren Crowe. Solana M, a daughter of Peruvian Hanover, gave Crowe his second win on the card in a time of 2:02.1.

Oceanview Kitty (Brian MacPhee), a daughter of N Xample, used front-end tactics to make her way to the winner's circle, pacing the mile in 1:59.2 for trainer Claude Poirier.

Island Quick Cash (Gilles Barrieau), a Quick Comeback filly, was interfered with twice in her division, but overcame those obstacles prevailing in 2:02.2 for trainer Wade Sorrie.

In the final freshman filly split, the Largo miss, Darko (Kenneth Arsenault), triumphed for trainer Ralph Annear in a new lifetime mark of 1:59.4.

Sophomore fillies also had their time to shine in a handful of divisions.

In the afternoon's final event, Porthill Friendly (Walter Cheverie), made her way to victory lane with the fastest winning performance amongst the sophomore fillies.

Sitting third for most of the mile, the daughter of Drop Off put in a :29.4 final quarter to prevail over the pocket-sitter and favourite Tobins Paradise (Todd Trites) in 1:59.4. The pacesetter, Elite Rhythm (Earl Smith), finished third.

Unraced at two, the five-time winner is trained and owned by Jean Charles Belliveau of Dieppe, N.B.

For The Luv Abunny, a winner of the Bill Quigg Memorial Stake and the Maritimer Stake Final, dominated her split in rein to Bernard McCallum. The Western Paradise filly paced the mile in 2:00.1 for trainer Dale Pinkney.

In another division, Emily J Down (Danny Romo), converted from a perfect pocket trip to win by half a length over Shadowcross Arose (Todd Trites) in 2:00 flat. The Drop Off miss is trained by Stephen Downey.

Beer Drinkin Doll (Ernest Laffin), a Town Profit filly trained by Blair Laffin, rallied from off the pace to score in her division in 1:59.2, while the daughter of Yankee Leader, Island Idol (Terry Gallant), used similar tactics to prevail in 2:02.
