Maritimes' Best Mares Meet Thursday

The spotlight will be focused on the best mares in Maritime harness racing as the region’s elite compete in the Erwin Andrew Memorial Thursday night at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park

. Post time is 7pm.

In the first division scheduled for race 8, Grace and Harv, who has 14 top three finishes on the season including 10 wins, has dawn the rail for driver Gilles Barrieau. The six-year-old mare takes on Abby Best from post 2. Kenny Arsenault will drive for owner Angus MacLean. The daughter of Cambest was charted in 1:58.4 over Inverness while two starts prior calculated a 1:57 clocking. The event, named in honor of one of the most respected horseman in the sport, has a close family tie when sons Bill and Brian Andrew of the Meridian Farms flagship team up with Red Star Ashlee in their father’s race from post 5. PL Betterway, with Gary Chappell, and Shooters Bay, with Walter Cheverie in the bike, complete the field.

The second division of the Erwin Andrew has Slim N Sleek as the morning line favorite. The mare, owned by the Downy Racing Stable of Saint John, NB, delivered a solid performance in her last appearance at EPR with a two length victory in 1:58.4. Olivia Hall and Ron Matheson, second choice at 3-1, make their tenth start of the season for Matheson’s co-owner Tom Clark of Charlottetown. Blissful Riddle lands on the pylons for driver Mike Stevenson while Tobins Paradise and N Xample Deal make up the power-packed field.

The Erwin Andrew Memorial Final, presented by Meridian Farms and Standardbred Canada, will be staged October 20th at Red Shores at Summerside.
