YS Lotus will be back to defend his Gold Cup & Saucer title this weekend at the Charlottetown Driving Park thanks to his 1:52.4 triumph in Trial 2 held Monday evening at the famed PEI oval.

In rein to Louis Philippe Roy, YS Lotus got away third from Post 3 while Sapphire City and Arque Hanover battled to the quarter pole in :27.1. Arque Hanover won the battle and took the field through middle fractions of :55 and 1:24.2. YS Lotus launched a late attack and used his :27.4 closing speed to win by a neck over Sports Lightning in the $12,500 affair. Sapphire City took home the show dough, with Arque Hanover claiming the final spot in Saturday’s final thanks to his fourth-place finish.

Rene Allard trains the six-year-old son of If I Can Dream-Bolero Takara for owner Yves Sarrazin of Presentation, QC. Sent off as the even-money favourite, the gelding is now 4-for-11 this season and 22-for-92 in his career. He’ll go into the rich final with a bank account that sits at $271,519.
