Fans that hitched their wagons – and wallets – to driver Alfie Carroll at Hiawatha Horse Park on Thursday evening got some bang for their buck thanks to the reinsman’s five-win performance.
Carroll got the ball rolling with a win behind Artistic Madison in 1:58.1, and then the floodgates opened.
He won four straight races beginning with Vegas Luck (1:57.2) in Race 4, and he tacked on victories with L H Fillybuster (1:59.4 in Race 5), Shakethatash (1:56.1 in Race 6) and Vegas Strip Three (1:57.2 in Race 7) to bring his nightly win total to five.
The sulky sitter from Iona Station, Ontario, who earlier this year joined the 1,000-win club, is on the verge of setting a personal record for races won in a single season. He’s racked up 178 victories so far in 2014, a mere nine wins shy of matching the 187-win year he enjoyed last season.
