Two-year-old trotting fillies were out in full force Thursday evening at Mohawk Racetrack as the Campbellville oval played host to the first O.S.S. events of the season for trotting lasses.
Kadabra Queen captured the first of two O.S.S. Gold Series divisions for the tandem of driver Scott Coulter and trainer Chad Milner.
The daughter of Kadabra-Queen Street was treated to a ground-saving journey through the opening half before popping to the outside in the third quarter. Illusioneesta and Ms Miller took turns on the lead through fractions of :29.3, 1:00.3 and 1:30.3 but when the dust settled it was Kadabra Queen who came out on top. She fired home in :28 to win by a length over Illusioneesta in 1:59. Zorgwijk Sophia was third.
Sent off at odds of 9-1, the homebred score her first ever win for Harness Horsepower Inc and Frank Monte.
Sorceress Seelster was a popular winner in her $96,400 division for the team of driver Trevor Henry and trainer Jack Wray.
Henry shot the top with the daughter of Holiday Road-Self Desire, and together they led the field through first-half fractions of :27.4 and :59.4. Gotta Pay To Play made an early miscue but took the lead in the backstretch and marched the field to the three-quarter pole in 1:29.4. Sorceress Seelster found room in the lane and fired home in :28.3 to win by two lengths over Miss Mimi in 1:58.4. Shamrock Shaker took home third prize.
The younger, full-sister to Sergeant Seelster (1:53.3 - $111,786) was purchased for $13,000 by Jack Wray and Thomas Wray from last year’s Forest City Yearling Sale.
A set of $18,800 O.S.S. Grassroots divisions also went postward for two-year-old trotting fillies, and the hardware went to Christmas Candy and P L Layla in those contests.
P L Layla, a homebred daughter of Glidemaster-P L Blue Opal, got away fourth for driver Randy Waples before marching to the lead in backstretch. The filly carved out middle panels of :59.2 and 1:29.4 before scooting home in :30 to win by 2-1/2 lengths over Dalliance Seelster in 1:59.4. Kant Afford It was third.
Matt Dupuis trains the trotting lass for owner/breeder Prince Lee Acres of Uxbridge, Ont.
Christmas Candy was a wire-to-wire winner in the second division for driver Trevor Henry and trainer Ian Downey. The Angus Hall-Solange Kosmos homebred led the group through fractions of :30.1, 1:01.4 and 1:33 before kicking home in :29.1 to win by three-quarters of a length over Warrawee Trip in 2:02.1. Third prize went to race favourite Lady Intuition.
S S G Stables of North Boston, NY, bred and owns the first-time starter.
