Tarpon Hanover & Love Canal Romp In Gold Finals

Some of Ontario’s newest pacing stars were in action at Mohawk Racetrack on Friday evening, with the Campbellville oval hosting the $130,000 OSS Gold Series finals for two-year-old pacing fillies and the two-year-old pacing colts and geldings.

Love Canal, who was a 1:53.3 winner in last week’s debut effort, followed up that eye-catching score with a 1:52.3 tally in tonight’s rich final for the tandem of driver Jody Jamieson and trainer Tony O’Sullivan.

Jamieson got away near the middle of the pack with his charge while Adventurepan rocketed to the lead from Post 10 and threw down a first quarter in :27 before being overtaken by the pocket-sitting Its No Secret. That elim winner from week earlier hit the half in :56 and the three-quarter pole in 1:24.3 before being inhaled by Love Canal in deep stretch. Love Canal’s :27-second closing quarter earned her the three-length decision over Its No Secret, with Adventurepan taking home third prize.

The homebred daughter of Badlands Hanover-A Votre Pante is now 2-for-2 in her career for the partnership of Let It Ride Stables Inc and Robert Cooper Stables LLC of Boca Raton, FL. She has already stashed away $85,000 in earnings.

Tarpon Hanover became the fastest two-year-old in North America this season thanks to his 1:51.4 performance in the $130,000 OSS Gold Series final for the colt and gelding pacers. Scott Zeron mapped out the winning trip for the Dave Menary trainee who won his debut one week earlier in 1:52.4.

OK Fantastic sprinted to the top and laid down early fractions of :27.2 and :56, but he came under pressure from Tarpon Hanover, who got away fourth before going into first-over mode in the backstretch. Tarpon Hanover was dropped into another gear around the final turn and he had little problem clearing to the lead and taking the field past the three-quarter pole in 1:23.4. He opened up on his foes in the lane by using a :28-second final quarter to stop the teletimer in 1:51.4.

Brad Gray, Bruce Norris, Denis Breton and Dave Menary share ownership on the Badlands Hanover colt who was purchased for $82,000 from last year’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale. The youngster, who upped his lifetime earnings to $85,000, is a half-brother to the sub-1:50 performer, Tarver Hanover (1:49.2 - $829,919).
