Muscle Babe Rebounds

When Muscle Babe first landed in Ontario she was untouchable, but after racking up three straight scores a bit of shine came off the apple.

The three-year-old daughter of Muscle Mass-Oaklea Odessa swept the Ontario SBOA Stake in the month of May at Mohawk Racetrack, and after that she tacked on a 1:53.3 career-best clocking later that month in a $105,000 OSS Gold Series division for trainer Dave Menary. The next two outings, however, didn’t go as expected.

Muscle Babe disappointed as an odds-on favourite when she finished second in her next OSS assignment, and she was a well-beaten fourth in her next try in the elimination round for the Canadian Breeders Stake.

Menary had her back on her toes Tuesday evening at Mohawk Racetrack, and the majority of the betting public was along for the ride. Sent off at odds of 4-5, the sophomore rallied for a 1:54.3 score for driver James MacDonald in the $16,000 conditioned tilt restricted to Ontario-sired three-year-old fillies. She defeated last year’s O’Brien Award winner, Riveting Rosie, and Sweetie Hearts in the process.

Kjell Magne Andersen of Slependen, Norway bred and owns the trotting lass who improved this year’s record to 4-1-0 from seven starts with the win. The six-time winner has banked $225,662 to date.
