Locals Fillies To Step Up Saturday?

With all but one of the division's point leaders absent from Saturday’s Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots contest at Kawartha Downs, the three-year-old trotting fillies currently tied for second will be looking to make hay while the sun shines.

Fathers Amiga finished a half-length back of Swishnflick in the June 20 season opener at Mohawk Racetrack, and her connections would love to see her add a win to her resume Saturday and make the leap up to the top spot in the standings.

Peterborough resident Edward Peconi Jr. conditions Fathers Amiga for Patricia Wall of Omemee and James Patrick Wall of Young’s Point and the trio will place their faith in the considerable skills of reinsman Gord Brown of Brighton. Brown piloted the daughter of Amigo Hall in her May 18 qualifier over the Kawartha Downs oval, and again in a June 15 overnight event, finishing second on both occasions.

Through six starts this season, the filly has posted two seconds, one third and earnings of $6,670. She will look to pad those totals from Post 5 in the last $12,857 Grassroots division, slated as Race 9.

Fathers Amiga will be joined in the ninth race by Tymal Textme, who made a break and finished well out of the action in the Grassroots season opener and has prepped for Saturday’s test with a pair of qualifiers at Kawartha Downs.

On July 6, Edward Peconi Jr. piloted Tymal Textme to a 2:02.1 win in a qualifier, and on July 13 Reg Gassien crafted a runner-up effort in 2:00. Blackstock resident William James conditions Tymal Textme for his partners Donald Smith and Donna Parker of Hampton.

A two-time Grassroots winner last season, the daughter of Angus Hall will be looking to recover that form on Saturday. Lindsay resident Gassien will be back in the race bike, steering Tymal Textme from Post 7.

The three-year-old trotting fillies will be featured in Races 1, 2, and 5 through 9 on Saturday, July 20. The first Grassroots division will roll in behind the Kawartha Downs starting gate at 7:00 p.m.
