The connections of three of Scandinavia’s most powerful mature trotters have accepted an invitation from WEG to cross the ocean and contest the $730,000 Maple Leaf Trot at Mohawk Racetrack on July 25
.
Shipping into quarantine facilities at Mohawk tomorrow afternoon will be recent Copenhagen Cup winner, Triton Sund, million dollar earner, Glen Kronos, and Amour Ami, who has won three of four starts this year and is co-owned by Daniel and Henrik Sedin, the powerhouse twins who play for the Vancouver Canucks.
The three stallions will be joined in their transatlantic journey by Maid For Tag, an eight-year-old Norse-owned mare trained by Harald Lunde, who will be targeting the $365,000 Armbro Flight Stakes, also on July 25.
Together, they represent the strongest overseas participation in a number of years for Mohawk’s signature events for older trotters.
Triton Sund, trained by Stefan Hultman, is an eight-year-old Swedish-bred by Viking Kronos, out of the Sugarcane Hanover mare, Jade Sund. He has nearly $1.2-million in earnings to his credit for owner Olle Lindstrom of Stockholm, and has gone behind the starting gate 82 times, in at least half a dozen European countries. He is coming off a convincing victory in the E160,000 Copenhagen Cup, June 14, having rebounded from a disappointing finish in the May 31 Elitlopp.
Lufti Kolgjini trains Glen Kronos, a six-year-old son of Enjoy Lavec who is co-owned by Mo Ab of Sandviken, Sweden, and the Eastridge Stable of Mississauga, Ontario. The Italian-bred trotter has earned over $1 million in 54 career starts, with his most recent win coming in Ostersund, Sweden, on June 6, over 1-5/16 miles.
Amour Ami, by the Pennsylvania sire, Tagliabue, out of the Garland Lobell mare, Amour Hall, is a seven-year-old stallion who actually started his career in Canada under the tutelage of Per Henriksen, before being sold to German interests, and then to Swedish ones, in 2005. Now racing for the Sedin Stables ownership group, he will return to the Mohawk oval riding a two-race winning streak, with over $400,000 in his bankroll. Robert Bergh trains.
Racing fans will be able to catch their first glimpse of the Swedish contingent in eliminations for the Armbro Flight on Friday, July 17, and the Maple Leaf Trot on Saturday, July 18.
