Southwind Warsaw A Pocono Puzzler

Horses claimed out of their last start were noses apart in the $14,000 featured claiming handicap trot at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono on Monday, with Southwind Warsaw overcoming a step up in class to hang the smallest possible margin of defeat on What A Peach in 1:57.1.

What A Peach was either a peach or the pits in his last six starts for trainer Jason Robinson – second, break, win, break, win, break – and upon coming to Frank Kamine’s care for owner/driver Simon Allard, he managed to be both, making a miscue before the start, then getting back into the race with a big sweeping move.

Right on his bumper through the last quarter was the Chocolatier gelding Southwind Warsaw, making his first start for hot trainer Joe Skowyra and owner Rocco Stubbins, and just past headstretch the winner tipped wide to go after What A Peach, who had gotten the lead midlane, and wore Peach down in the final steps after the huge recovery move, causing the tote board to light up at $25.40, a number not often associated with driver George Napolitano, Jr. at Pocono.
