On Tuesday, June 21, the Virginia Racing Commission approved a licence for a local simulcast wagering facility. The approval will mark the first new off-track wagering location since Colonial Downs shut down in the spring of 2015.

According to an article by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the licence is for Breakers Sports Grille, which is located at 9127 W. Broad St. in Henrico County.

The Virginia Equine Alliance was the entity that applied for the licence.

Darrell Wood, speaking on behalf of the alliance, was quoted as saying that the group is looking to get the simulcasting operation open as quickly as possible.

The article goes on to cite the state racing commission’s acting executive secretary, David Lermond, as estimating that the OTB location could pull in handle of roughly $5 million in its inaugural year of operation.
