Elm Grove Ladyluck Best At Northside

A compact group of five headed postward in the top class at Northside Downs on Saturday (June 16) with the only mare in the field showing no mercy to her male counterparts on Father's Day weekend.

As the wings of the gate folded, Southwind Ricardo (Mark Pezzarello) showed early speed and fronted rail-sitting Elm Grove Ladyluck (Greg Bailey) to set the tempo. Southwind Ricardo made the first two calls, with a :28.1 quarter and :57.4 half before facing any sort of challenge. That challenge came shortly thereafter in the form of last week's winner, Burn Up Up Burr (Gerard Kennedy), who was followed into the outer flow down the backstretch by Nameisonthehalter (Larry Snow).

As the field approached the third station, Snow already had three-wide intentions with Nameisonthehalter. The field was tightly-bunched through a 1:27.3 third panel, gaining on the pacesetter with every stride. As the outer flow advanced, Bailey sent pocket-sitting Elm Grove Ladyluck out and around the front threesome to make that a four-wide calvary turning for home. Both Nameisonthehalter and Burn En Up Burr collared Southwind Ricardo, but Elm Grove Ladyluck would collar that pair and pace away to the 1:57.3 score. Nameisonthehalter was a quarter of a length back in second with show dough going to Burn Em Up Burr.

Owned by Irwin Claener of New Waterford, N.S. and trained by Leonard McLellan, Elm Grove Ladyluck (Coastocoast Yankee - Elm Grove Camlady) sports a solid seasonal summary of 4-2-0 in six starts. That win totals equals her seasonal output from 23 starts one year ago.

Driver Greg Bailey scored himself a natural hat-trick on the Saturday card, winning the race prior with 50-1 longshot Ankaway and second-choice Dusty Lane Royal before that. His three wins on the day tripled his output from the previous two seasons.
