Grana Padanno spent most of the mile buried on the rail in Monday’s $34,000 Preferred Trot at Mohawk Racetrack, but he managed to shake loose in deep stretch en route to posting a 7-1 upset in 1:53.1.

With Jody Jamieson at the lines, Grana Padanno got away fifth and watched Whiskey Tax rolled the field through panels of :26.3, :56 and 1:25. Whiskey Tax was swarmed by a host of challengers, including the late-rushing Grana Padanno. Jamieson edged off the rail in the lane and the gelding stormed home in :27 to win by a length over Olympic Son. Hillsonator was third.

Ben Baillargeon trains the four-year-old son of Andover Hall-Her Culese for owner Claude Hamel of Ayer’s Cliff, QC. The victory improved the trotter’s 2016 record to 3-2-3 from 13 trips to the track. The 12-time winner has banked $182,812 to date.
