A rare matinee program was contested at the Meadowlands on Thursday, with three-year-old trotting fillies getting the majority of the attention as they did battle in a trio of $21,400 divisions of the New Jersey Sires Stakes

.

Glide Power pulled off a 15-1 upset in her split winning in a career-best clocking of 1:55.4 for trainer/driver Jan Johnson. The daughter of Yankee Glide-Armbro Vote, who was making her first start of the year, used a strong kick in the stretch to post the win over Celebrity Madonna and Jettalady.

Elbridge Gerry, Jr. of Locust Valley, NY and Diamond Creek Farm LLC of Paris, KY own the three-time winner, who upped her lifetime earnings to $35,791 with the win. The $25,000 Lexington Select Yearling Sale purchase was bred by Yankeeland Farms Inc of Frederick, MD.

Springtime Volo caught cover going into the final turn for driver Brian Sears, and that helped the Classic Photo miss earn the win in a career-best clocking of 1:55. It was a New Jersey Sires Stakes double for trainer Jan Johnson, who watched the filly pull off the 6-1 upset over Keystone Tabby and Muscle Amour.

Bred by Jorgen Jahre, Jr. of Sandefjord, NO, who co-owns the three-time winner with Kentuckiana Racing Stable of Lexington, KY, Springtime Volo bumped her lifetime earnings to $46,857 with the victory. Jahre also raced the filly’s high profile dam, Silver Springs, who captured the 2004 edition of the Hambletonian Oaks.

The Jimmy Takter-trained and Ron Pierce-driven Costa Rica catapulted off cover at the head of the lane and drew off to win the final division in 1:56.4 over Title IX and Yansky.

The daughter of Muscles Yankee-Examination, who hadn’t raced since winning the $157,800 Matron Final as a rookie, notched her 11th lifetime score for partners Christina Takter of East Windsor, NJ and John and Jim Fielding of Toronto, ON. The lion’s share of the purse pushed her lifetime earnings over the $1 million mark, which isn’t bad for a filly who was purchased out of the 2008 Harrisburg Yearling Sale for $23,000.
