Major Hill didn’t exactly set the world on fire in his rookie season, but he turned in an eye-catching score Thursday evening at Mohawk Racetrack as he continues his quest to dance with the continent’s finest sophomores in this year’s Pepsi North America Cup.

Jody Jamieson worked out a perfect trip for the Dave Menary-trained son of Art Major-Bunnys Legacy in Thursday evening’s assignment, and as a result the speedy homebred earned a new lifetime mark of 1:50.4.

Jamieson rushed his charge to the lead from Post 8, and they hung up the opening quarter in :26.3 before giving way to race favourite Teddys Super Toy in the backstretch. That gelding carved out middle fractions of :54.3 and 1:23.2 before overtaken in the closing strides by Major Hill. His :27.2 closing quarter earned him the win by three-quarters of a length over Teddys Super Toy. Some Gold, another Pepsi North America Cup hopeful, was a hard-charging third in the $17,000 conditioned event.

After failing to hit the board in three starts last season, Thursday’s victory improved the pacer’s 2016 record to 2-1-1 from four starts. He’s banked more than $27,000 to date.

There were multiple winning tickets sold on Thursday’s Jackpot Hi 5 wager, and as a result a carryover of $330,247 will find its way into Friday’s card of racing at the Campbellville, Ont. oval.

Fans with the winning combination of 6-1-5-10-8 took home a solid return of $3,329.90 for a $1-based wager on Thursday evening.
