Abbatiello, Fusco Top Freehold Meet

Freehold Raceway’s 2015 winter-spring meet concluded on May 24 with Eric Abbatiello leading the driver standings and Vincent Fusco Jr. on top of the trainer standings.

Abbatiello, the leading driver at Freehold for the previous five years, posted 97 wins from 571 starters. He also had 95 seconds and 74 thirds for a 47 per cent in-the-money rate. His mounts earned a meet-high $364,632.

Rounding out the Top 5 are Stephen Smith with 84 wins, Vincent Ginsburg with 73 wins, James Marshall III with 64 wins and Joseph Bongiorno with 62 wins.

Fusco trainees visited the winner’s circle 35 times from 133 starters for earnings of $105,029. With 17 seconds and 24 thirds, his stable finished in the money 57 per cent of the time.

John Urbanski was second in the trainer standings with 26 wins, followed by Robert Bongiorno with 21, David Pinkney Jr. with 20 and two trainers with 18 wins each – Frank Scamporino Jr. and Nick Surick.

The winningest horse of the meet was Body Guard, who had 11 wins and two seconds in 16 starts. The seven-year-old son of Sportsmaster banked $18,626 at Freehold.

Owner-trainer Valeriya Medik of Manalapan, NJ, lost Body Guard to a claim out of the gelding’s last start on May 19, 2015.

Freehold will re-open on September 4.
