Firefighters responded to a fire at Sunnybrook Stables in Toronto early Monday morning, which resulted in the death of 16 horses.

The fire started around 3 a.m. (EDT) at one barn on the property, spreading to a second soon after. Around 40 to 50 firefighters arrived promptly and managed to rescue 13 horses from the second barn, transporting them to another barn for holding before later transporting them to the Canadian National Exhibition grounds with help from the Toronto Police mounted unit.

"The crews did an excellent job getting the horses out of the second [barn]," said Toronto Fire Platoon Chief Doug Wishart.

Sunnybrook Stables is located in Sunnybrook Park, just north of Toronto's Leaside neighbourhood. It offers riding classes and summer camps.

The park was closed during the fire due to concern that some horses may have run loose during the fire, but by noon officials determined no horses had escaped the property.

Firefighters got the fire under control around 6 a.m. (EDT), with officials finding no indications of the fire being suspicious. The Ontario Fire Marshal will visit the scene.
