The heavy machinery is out and putting in the work to make the new Century Mile racetrack near Edmonton a reality.

A feature from CBC goes behind the scenes to show the progress being made for Canada's newest racetrack.

"It's not everyday when you build a new horse racing track," said Arthur Christensen, senior superintendent with Chandos Construction and horse owner himself. "I have a horse training at Northlands, a two-year-old...I've got high hopes that I'm going to be in the winner's circle next year."

The opening date for the Century Mile was initially projected in late 2018, but materials indicate that opening has now been pushed back to 2019. However, race date calendars for Alberta harness racing show proposed dates slated for Century Mile in Fall 2018. Fred Gillis, Executive Director with the Alberta Standardbred Horse Association, confirmed to Trot Insider that the organization is aware of the delay and that various scenarios to remedy the situation are presently being explored.

Harness racing in Alberta shifts to Century Downs with the 2018 season opener slated for Sunday, April 1.
