Portuondo Returns To Flamboro Downs

Returning for the second season of Announcer Idol at Flamboro Downs, Jason Portuondo showcased his race-calling skills once again giving the sport's pros a run for their money.

The CHCH Sports anchor was originally scheduled to take part in this year's competition on February 15, but that race card was cancelled due to weather conditions.

Exhibiting his horse racing knowledge, the former O'Brien Awards host and Woodbine television personality was unassisted as he gave a professional account of Sunday night's fourth race.

"First up with a quick rush on the outside, here comes dangerous Phil Hudon and he's thinking of going right to the front," said Portuondo, calling the winning move as Hudon sent Gaetan Herbert's three-year-old pacing filly Mischieviousgirls to the lead after the opening quarter.

Mischieviousgirls ($6.20) led the field the rest of the way en route to a 2:00 triumph over Golfgirl. "It's all about the girls in race number four!" proclaimed Portuondo.

Announcer Idol continues every Sunday night through March 22. Fans will then vote for their favourite race call to award the winner with a donation to the charity of their choice.

In other Sunday harness action, the $7,500 Preferred 3 Pace was won by the Stephane Larocque-trained Fridaynightflight ($4.60) and driver J.R. Plante in 1:56.3. Owned by Darren Mahoney, the six-year-old gelding scored the front-end victory by two and a half lengths over Pouvoir Duharas and Darth Badar.
