Racing A Mainstream Newsmaker

Ontario's horse racing industry and its adjustment to the new reality presented by the Ontario government made headlines throughout the year -- not just on Standardbred Canada's homepage, but in mainstream media as well.

Two news outlets have listed horse racing and the severed partnership turned-planned re-integration with the Ontario Lottery & Gaming Corp. among its top newsmakers of 2013.

Metroland Media's mykawartha.com ranked the casino and horse racing issues surrounding Peterborough and Kawartha Downs as its runner-up for 2013 newsmaker of the year.

The Niagara Falls Review placed both Fort Erie Racetrack and OLG funding in its top newsmakers of the year. Noting that that track "has been on life support for years," The Review mentions that the tracks in planning a Horse of the Year Festival for 2014 that will hopefully give the track and the region an added tourism attraction.
