With just one race card left at Woodbine in 2009, the battle to determine WEG’s top trainer remains red hot

.

Trainer Tracy Brainard, who sent out five entries on Monday night, December 28, scored an additional two victories to add to her 2009 total, with Did It Again and Blue Suede Shoes. By pushing her total up to 107 wins on the WEG circuit, she overtook Benoit Baillargeon’s current tally of 106.

Brainard has two entries going postward in Woodbine’s final card of the year on New Year’s Eve, PW Ivory Grin (10-1 in the ninth race) and Big Lead (the 7-2 second choice in the eighth), who may cement her first bid for WEG’s trainer of the year.

Although favourite Thrillionaire, one of two entries Baillargeon brought to Woodbine on Monday, December 28, failed to deliver in the Niagara Series final, he has four more shots at year-end honours who are slated to take part in the New Year’s Eve afternoon card at Woodbine: Mcpride in the first (7-1), Pickmeamerigold in the second (5-1), Ingrid
Hanover in the seventh (7-1), and strong favourite General Luckypercy (7-5) in the ninth.

Baillargeon is looking for his second consecutive crown as WEG’s top trainer. He shared the honour in 2008 with Rob Fellows.

In terms of purses won on the WEG circuit in 2009, Brainard currently tops the standings with $4,668,672, to Baillargeon’s $2,161,473 and Casie Coleman’s $3,402,960.

It’s going to come right down to the wire in this particular horse race, so please join us at Woodbine to ring in the New Year, and perhaps a new trainer champion, on Thursday, December 31. Post time for the first race is 1:20 p.m.
