Rally At Fort Erie

Roughly 60 frustrated workers at the Fort Erie racetrack for thoroughbreds conducted a rally Sunday, December 21 in the track parking lot. "It gave us a little bit of hope that by January 15, the government is supposed to have an answer for us one way or the other, so we can go on with our lives," thoroughbred horseperson Claudia Whalen was quoted as saying.

The quotes have come in an article today in the St. Catharines Standard.

"This race track drops $320 million (per year) into the town ... that's a lot of money," said Whalen. "The town has to step up, and the province has to step up and help us out."

The report states that a second rally, with riders on horses, is planned for January 15, 2009.

Last week, Fort Eric racetrack owner Nordic Gaming Corporation announced that 190 jobs at the track would be terminated in March, 2009 and that the status of the border oval in terms of live race dates is still up in the air.
