'Boomboom' Perfect In Preferred

Not even a Post 7 handicap could keep Boomboom Ballykeel from finding his way to victory lane in Monday’s $8,000 Preferred 3 for pacers at The Raceway at Western Fair District.

With Alfie Carroll in the bike, Boomboom Ballykeel got away fifth before latching onto third over cover as the field headed to the half. Blue Chip Sunshine took the field through early fractions of :29.3 and 1:00.2, but it was Deseronto who showed a short lead while racing parked outside of Blue Chip Sunshine at the three-quarter pole in 1:29.

Boomboom Ballykeel made a three-wide move to get around foes at that point, and he continued to drive his way near the leaders. He was third and digging at the head of the lane, and his :29.3 closing panel wound up earning him the win by three-quarters of a length over a very determined Blue Chip Sunshine in 1:59. Third prize was earned by Deseronto.

Sent off as the 5-2 favourite in the eight-horse affair, Boomboom Ballykeel improved his seasonal record to 8-6-3 from 40 trips to the track. Richard Moreau trains the career winner of $756,076 for owner/breeder Ballykeel Racing Inc of Tillsonburg, Ont.

Monday’s card also featured round two of the Alliance Series for claiming mares. The pacers were split into three divisions – each worth $4,400.

Winning their respective assignments were Sophies Shadow (2:02), Imnotamirage (2:02.4) and Regal Again (2:00.1).
