Another Roadblock For Sports Wagering

On Friday, November 21 In New Jersey, Federal District Court Judge Michael Shipp ruled that the State cannot partially lift a ban on sports wagering in New Jersey.

An article on nytimes.com has quoted state Senate president Stephen Sweeney as saying, “We are going to continue pursuing every legal option available.”

The report explains that the State has taken the position that it is not looking to licence or authorize the wagering activity. Additionally, New Jersey is not looking to regulate the industry, but is looking to end the prohibition of the practice.

Sweeney went on to say, “The economic impact that sports wagering can have on New Jersey is far too important to simply shrug our shoulders and move on.”

Another report on the situation, by ESPN, has cited state Senator Ray Lesniak as saying that New Jersey will soon file an appeal of the ruling.

The report has quoted Dennis Drazin, adviser to Darby Development LLC, operators of Monmouth Park, as saying, "Obviously we're disappointed, but not terribly surprised. After analyzing the rationale expressed by the court in granting a temporary restraining order last month, [Friday’s] action was rather expected. We will once again return to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and ask that they order strict adherence to their 2013 decision, which established the road map for New Jersey to begin offering sports wagering.

"For now, it's status quo. Nevertheless, we remain confident that the Third Circuit will render a favourable result for Monmouth Park."
