Animal Rights Activists Target New Hampshire

Earlier this month animal rights activists won a referendum to shut down greyhound racing in Massachusetts. Now the group is looking for a similar ban in New Hampshire with the support of the local racetrack’s president.

According to an article on UnionLeader.com, Joseph Sullivan, president of Hinsdale Greyhound Park, would support the proposed legislation but not because he agrees with the anti-greyhound racing group that greyhound racing is inhumane.

Ending live racing "would make economic sense," he said, "provided they didn't phase out anything else," Sullivan said referring to simulcasting.

As a matter of fact, said Sullivan, "We're working on our own bill that would relieve us of the state requirement to have 50 live racing days" in order to simulcast from other tracks.

Simply put, Sullivan said live racing loses money. It costs more than it brings in.

"It does not compete and hasn't for years," he was quoted as saying.
