A set of $8,500 Preferred 3 events were featured Tuesday at The Raceway at Western Fair District, with Top Royal and Kennel Buddy taking home weekly bragging rights in their respective events.

Top Royal never saw the pylons in the Fillies & Mares Preferred 3, but the rugged trip couldn’t keep her from finding her way to victory lane for the tandem of driver J Harris and trainer Nick Boyd.

The four-year-old daughter of Royal Mattjesty-Top Of The World chased Alphabet Queen through panels of :28.3, :58.1 and 1:26.3 before using a :30.3 closing panel to work her way to the top and post the half-length decision over Ginger in 1:57.1. Howmacfiesty was third.

Brydown Farms Inc of Clinton, Ont. owns the distaffer who now owns a 7-5-1 record from 27 trips to the track this season. The 15-time winner has banked $131,592 to date.

Kennel Buddy, on the other hand, was treated to a pretty trip in the Preferred 3 for trotters. Bruce Richardson worked out a second-over ride for the even-money favourite, and she parlayed that trip into a narrow triumph.

Stonebridge Score shot to the top and served up first-half fractions of :29 and :59.4. Star Photo, who came first over on the way to the half, gained the lead while racing parked past the three-quarter pole in 1:29. Kennel Buddy, who was glued to that one’s cover, stepped home in :30.1 en route to posting the head decision over Star Photo in 1:59.3. P C Cantore took home third prize.

Mike Dowling of Waterford, Ont. owns and trains the seven-year-old son of Ken Warkentin-Bernice Daniece who owns an impressive record of 11-8-7 from 35 starts this season. He’s banked over $62,000 this year and more than $289,000 in his career.
