The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission met Monday (October 26) and approved a traditional schedule of racing for the Red Mile for 2016.
Harness dates were also approved for Bluegrass Downs in Paducah and Thunder Ridge. Dates for 2016 total 68.
The Red Mile was awarded 32 dates, from July 24 – October 9. Grand Circuit racing will begin September 29 and run through October 9. Bluegrass Downs was awarded 15 dates, for operating June 10 – July 10. Thunder Ridge received 21 dates, for an April 13 – May 27 meet.
The Thunder Ridge dates, however, could be in jeopardy. Thunder Ridge owes three Thoroughbred tracks in Kentucky more than $600,000 in simulcast settlement fees: Churchill Downs is owed more than $300,000, Turfway Park $235,000, and Ellis Park more than $100,000, officials said.
Keeneland has been working to purchase Thunder Ridge and relocate the facility and license to Corbin in southern Kentucky, with plans for a Quarter Horse meet. The proceeds from the sale of Thunder Ridge were to be used to pay the simulcasting fees owed.
